It was 1979 when the first Snooker World Cup was introduced and Ireland in the mid eighty’s was the team to beat as the North and South joined together with the formidable team of Alex Higgins, Dennis Taylor and Eugene Hughes (Pictured).
The trio won the event three times in all before the event stopped in 1990 until Thailand ran a one off event in 1996 in which Ireland reached the final only to lose to Scotland.
It was Doherty, O’Brien and Stephen Murphy this time round and the duo of Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brien will now represent Ireland yet again in Thailand from Monday when the event kicks off yet again.
This time round it’s only two players and Ireland will face Wales, Egypt, Pakistan and Germany over the coming days with the top two teams qualifying for the quarter finals next Saturday.
Pakistan is up first for the lads and the lads but it’s the final game of the group against Wales that hopefully will decide 1st and 2nd spot in the groups. Wales certainly have a strong team however with Williams and Stevens a formidable opposition for the Irish lads.
Scotland would have to be favorites with John Higgins and Stephen Maguire while the England’s team of Selby and Carter would have to be close second’s.
