Sherwin makes it 5 in a row

The 5th ladies ranking event took place in Q’s snooker club on Sunday 8th Feb.  Newcomer Kim Cuthbert took on Ronda Sheldreck in her 1st match. Kim is new to the game, having only started playing a few months ago, but she proved in this match that she will be a serious contender for the future as she showed great insight into the game and some good skills.  There was absolutely nothing to separate these 2 all throughout the match.  Kim won the first frame on the black; then the 2nd one on the pink to take a 2-0 lead. Ronda held her nerve well and potted an excellent black in the 3rd to take the score to 2-1.  The next frame was also won on the black by Kim to give her a 3-1 victory in a match that really could have gone either way.  Kim then played Michelle French in the semi-final.  Michelle won the 1st frame comfortably; Kim was much stronger in the 2nd frame, narrowly losing on the pink.  Michelle won the 3rd frame when Kim conceded needing 3 snookers, giving Michelle her place in another final.

Michelle Sherwin played Katie French in the other semi.  Michelle won the first frame on the blue, after Katie played excellently to stay with the number 1 throughout the frame.  Michelle moved up a gear in the 2nd frame and won it by a margin of 58 points; then continued with 2 x 20+ breaks in the 3rd to win the match well by 3-0 in the end.

Sherwin got off to a flying start in the 1st frame, consistently potting to win the frame just before the colours.  Early in the 2nd frame, Sherwin missed an easy red into the middle and left it on for French who capitalised on the miss making a good 18 break, but the frame swung at this point with Sherwin playing catch up for most of it. French potted some fantastic balls, especially cutting plenty of pots down the cushion which is her speciality. Sherwin had a marginal lead coming to the colours, both had chances on each of the colours, but Sherwin took, yellow to blue to win the frame. Sherwin got off to a good start in the 3rd frame, and held a good lead throughout, French had a chance to bring the frame right to the end, but missed the brown which Sherwin potted and then took an excellent blue with the rest into the yellow pocket to win the frame and match.

The ladies would like to wish Claire Mill a speedy recovery as she is currently having to sit out playing with a back injury.  We all hope to see you back soon Claire.

We would like to thank Chris and the staff at Q’s for their help on the day, and we would like to send out a special thanks to Mick Flood who helped out refereeing all day and did the final as well.
