On Wednesday the 27th of August our RIBSA Chairman John Doherty and our RIBSA Children’s officer PJ Nolan attended a workshop on Mental Health Awareness in Sport in the County Hotel in Newry, Northern Ireland.
The course was presented by the Chief Executive of Aware Siobhan Doherty with a number of NGB’s from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and the workshop was held in conjunction with Aware and Sport Northern Ireland.
The aim of the workshop was to understand what mental health is and recognising the factors affecting mental health, The difference between mental health problems and mental health disorders, Reducing the stigma around mental health issues and understanding treatment of self help to anyone within your sport if they have any problems.
Overall the workshop was excellent and presented to the highest standard. RIBSA will now develop their own Mental health policy and they will hope to have handouts at events this season covering these issues for all our members.
