North west Snooker Club in Letterkenny hosted the first Intermediate tournament of the season last weekend. This year the Snooker association of Ireland has decided to change the format for some of the tournaments, there will be four different formats, Seeded Groups, Open Draw, Double Elimination and Seeded draw. The new formats have created a lot of debate on the social media websites over the Summer break. The Snooker Association hope this debate will encourage more participations in national tournaments this year as numbers have been falling for the past number of years.
The first regional tournament held last weekend in the North West snooker club was in seeded groups. After the groups were finished the four players who qualified for the knockout stages were Sean Mc Veigh (North West), Conor Henderson (Twin Towns), Garth Kirwan (CYMS) and Mickey Duffy (Twin Towns). In the first match Sean MC Veigh overcame Conner Henderson by 3 frames to 2. The second match saw Garth Kirwan overcome Mickey Duffy by 3 frames to 2.
The final was a tight affair with Garth Kirwan getting the high break for the competition with an 84 break. Sean Mc Veigh came out eventual winner taking the match at 3 frames to 1.
RIBSA would like to thank John Doherty from the Northwest SC for the use of the club for the day and a big well done to Sean and all the players on a great day of snooker. The action will return for event 2 on Saturday 20th of October.
