Irish Snooker players Josh Boileau and Brendan O’Donoghue were both in sparkling form in Edenderry on the Friday 6th of October.
Edenderry billiards and snooker club put on the exhibition to promote snooker in the area. They both played frames against local players to start the evening’s entertainment, and in Josh’s first frame against Willie Murrin, he knocked in a superb break of 97 while on table 3 Brendan in his first ever frame on that table got a fantastic break of 106 against Gaylon Clancy. The next opponent for Josh was Adam (mighty) Quinn, Adam gave Josh a bit of a scare with the balls he was potting, while on table 3, Darren Ayres played Brendan. Both local players gave good accounts of themselves, but Josh and Brendan emerged victorious.
At this stage Brendan moved up to table 1 and Josh went to table 3. Philip McGrath was Brendan’s opponent and Brendan got a 57 break, 8 reds and 7 blacks, unfortunately he missed the eighth black going for a max. Meanwhile on table 3 Josh was not having things too easy as Jamie Kelly was determined to win one frame for the home players. He potted some fantastic balls and was in front going onto the colours, but Josh had other ideas and calmly cleared the colours to win.
Eugene Maloney was next up to face Brendan, and Darren Ayres faced Josh. Brendan had a break of 78, Eugene is just back after his honeymoon and everyone in the club wish him and his lovely wife a long and happy life together. Darren tried hard to compete with Josh’s potting but he missed a couple of balls he would normally get, and Josh ran out a comfortable winner.
Next up was a best of 5 frame match between Brendan and Josh. Brendan won the first frame with some terrific potting, Josh levelled the match at one all before Brendan got his second century of the night a great break of 100, he missed an awkward yellow. Frame four was a battle of wits and it was Josh who levelled matters again to force a deciding frame. In the final frame it was Brendan who got the better start and he was 36 in front with 4 reds left. Josh got the most amazing clearance that Ronnie would have been proud of, and emerged a 3 – 2 winner.
