Play got underway here at the Ivy Rooms in Carlow Ireland this morning in the IBSF World Billiards Championships quarter finals at 10am.
The quarter finals were played over a three hour period and no surprises so far in the Championships as Mike Russell and Matthew progressed easily through to the Semi Finals. World number one Mike Russell knocked in 1,701 points against his Vietnamese opponent Thanh Binh Nguyen who scored just 474 points in reply and looks on course to add and retain the World Billiards Championships times format to the 150 points format World title he won here in Carlow at the Ivy Rooms last Saturday.
Russell’s main threat could well be the Australian Matthew Bolton who was seeded number 1 after the group stages of this event and won his quarter final game by a massive 1,227 points when he defeated England’s Nalin Patel by 1,701 points to 474 points.
In the other quarter final games Billy Bousfield of England defeated the Republic of Ireland player Aidan Murray by 198 points and Phil Mumford of England defeated Vietnams Thanh Long Nguyen by 370 points.
The semi finals will be played later today and the final will be played tomorrow over three two hour timed sessions.
