Davy is National Amateur Champion

On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May Snooker and Billiards Ireland held the National Amateur Championship in the HQ Carlow.

The Irish Amateur Championship Cup was the donated by the family of Ger Murray who sadly passed away last year. Ger was former Chairman of SBI formally known as RIBSA, Treasurer of RIBSA, Chairman of the Referees Association but more importantly Ger was a great friend to all in SBI.

We had a fantastic entry of 69 entries in the championships and over the weekend we held the qualifiers down to the quarter finals to be played during the finals weekend

During the finals weekend the quarter finals were played and results as follows

Quarter Finals

Ryan Cronin 5-1 Noel Gleeson
Philip Browne 1-5 Brendan O Donoghue
Ross Bulman 5-1 John Torpey
David Morris 5-3 Rodney Goggins

Semi Finals

Ryan Cronin 5-6 Brendan O Donoghue
Ross Bulman 1-6 David Morris

In the first Semi Finals David took early control early control of the match and let up as he ran out a comfortable winner. In the second Semi Final it was Ryan who took the early lead where he had leads of 4-1 and 5-3 before Brendan took the match in the deciding frame.

Final

Brendan O Donoghue 1-7 David Morris

In the final it was David who looked like he wasn’t going to miss a ball as he took a lead of 5 frames to 1 at the interval. After the interval it was David who took a very close seventh frame to lead 6-1 before closing out the match to win his fifth Irish Amateur Championship.

Ger Murray’s brother Declan was on hand to present the cup to David. Declan said Ger loved Snooker and it was an honor to here to present this cup.

David Morris said afterwards that he was delighted to win this cup and dedicated the win to both Ger Murray and his own Grandmother who passed away recently

The high break of the tournament was 133 by both Ross Bulman and David Morris. SBI President Jim Leacy presented all the awards to the winners. It was fantastic Amateur Season and SBI hope to build on this success next season.
