Snooker & Billiards Ireland held a U-21 qualifier on Saturday the 29th of January in the SBI HQ in Carlow for SBI players for the 2022 U-21 European Championships which will be held in Poland in April.
SBI announced 5 players will qualify for this U-21 Championship in Poland. National U-21 Snooker Champion Ross Bulman from Youghal received an automatic spot and the four qualifying spots went to Leone Crowley, Aaron Goldrick, Alex Currid and Aaron Smith, who qualified on the day. SBI will be in contact this week with each qualifier regarding flights, hotel.
The SBI qualifying event was held in two groups. In group A it was Leone Crowley who was in great form winning all his matches to win his group. Leone fly back from England the previous day where he is training in the Victoria Academy in Sheffield with all the top professional players. Aaron Goldrick finished in 2nd spot to gain his qualification.
In group B it was Aaron Smith who topped his group with 3 wins from his four matches but it was a very tight affair that went to frame difference to decide the final spot. In the end it was Alex Currid from Liam Mellows SC Wexford who gained the final qualification spot for Poland.
National Coach PJ Nolan was very impressed with the four qualifiers and also with Jason Keogh, Lewis Casserly, Adam Halnon, Ryan McGuirk and Ronan McGuirk also impressed on the day. This was the first junior event played on the new STAR tables and with more practice on these taables, he believes that it will help improve their games more.
