TJ Dowling wins Fermoy Cross Invitation

This year sees the second running of the Fermoy Cross invitation. Following on from the success of last years tournament we hope that this years tournament will be bigger and better. It is great to see nearly all of the players who competed last year returning to Fermoy and also some new faces. This years tournament looks like it will throw up some very exciting matches with players like Mick Judge,TJ Dowling,Brendan O Donoghue,David Hogan, Greg Casey, Rodney Goggins, last years winner, and of course our very own Daithi Whelan, All experienced internationals along with all the other great players coming to Fermoy.

Fermoy has a great tradition of holding prestigious invitation tournaments over the years like the Grandons invitation which ran for many years. It is also great to see other small clubs such as the new institute running these tournaments keeping competitive snooker alive and well. The tournament starts on Friday evening at 8 pm with 3 matches and recommences on Saturday morning at 11am with the Quarter finals starting on Sunday morning at 10am. All matches up to and including the Q/finals are best of 5 frames, semi’s best of 7 and final best of 9.

Fermoy CMWS recently undertook a major refurbishment of the club at a cost of 23,000 Euro’s which included 3 Shender tables with state of the art lighting and electronic scoreboards, insulation, new flooring and carpets. We must thank all of our hard working committee and Fas workers which made this possible.

For a small club Fermoy CMWS has consistently boxed above its weight.  We have produced 8 Internationals, Daithi Whelan,Mark Pyne, Mick Casey,Alan Cleary,John Dorgan,John Murphy,Avril Murphy and David Joyce(Irish team manager). We are also currently organizing a referee’s seminar with the Irish referee’s association to qualify 5 new referee’s.

Finally we would like to extend a Cead mile failte to all visitors to Fermoy this weekend and hope you will bring back home fond memories of your visit.
