Thomas Wins Super Senior’s No. 6

On Sunday 22 March 2026, the 6th tournament of the Super Senior’s calendar year, was hosted by Roadstone S.C.

13 players competed in this event with a few notable closely contested matches. Again top seed for this tournament was Brendan Thomas.

In the last 16 matches, there was comfortable wins for Colm Daly, Paul Kellett, Mick Dalton & Kevin McMahon who won all their respective matches 3-0. Stephen Merrigan also progressed, with a 3-1 victory over Simon Scott.

Into the Quarter-finals, where the No. 2 seed Paudie Kelly from Tipperary faced off against Limerick man Kevin McMahon, and it was Kevin who got off to a flier, taking a 2-0 lead with the aid of a 47 break in their 2nd frame, but back came Paudie to win the next 2 frames to force a decider. The final frame was a tense affair with plenty of tactical snooker being played by both players. In the end it was Paudie won took the frame and match to progress into the Semi’s.

Another fantastic match was contested between local player Stephen Merrigan & Paul Kellett. Paul took the opening frame and in the 2nd frame, Stephen with a 29 point lead .. looked to be in control when he played a snooker off the yellow sending it down the table, while leaving the white in behind the green (on its spot), but unfortunately for him the yellow cannoned the black (it was fairly close to the corner bag) and send the black into the corner pocket. Paul soon after, took that 2nd , but in the 3rd it was Stephen who received good fortune when he was clearing the colours and played to pot the final blue into the centre bag only to see it miss, travel across the table and fall into the opposite middle pocket. Stephen followed that up in taking the 4th to force another decider. The final frame was another tactical affair, but in the end it was Paul who ground out the win. Brendan beat Colm Daly 3-1 in a closely contested match and Brian McPhee also got the better against Mick Dalton 3-1.

Into the semi-finals, we had the top seed playing against Paul Kellett and in the end it was a relatively comfortable victory for Brendan in securing a  3-0 win. No. 2 seed Paudie Kelly played Brian McPhee in the other semi-final and again it too ended with a 3-0 win for the Tipp man. Paudie also registered the highest break of the tournament in this match with a 57 break.

So in the final we had the top 2 seeds contesting it out, not only to win this event, but maybe swap their seedings for the upcoming Championship in April.

The final itself became a highly tactical match with the run of the balls dictating the course of play !

Brendan took the opening 2 frames, and Paudie responded in winning the 3rd. Into the 4th, Paudie developed a 39 point lead.

But Brendan dug in and scrapped his way back and there was nothing in it at the colours! Finally, it was local player and top seed Brendan who potted match winning pink ball to not only secure the frame and win the match 3-1, but in doing so also retain his No. 1 spot.

SBI would like to thank Stephen Merrigan and all the staff at Roadstone Snooker club for hosting a very successful tournament. Thanks also goes to TD Shane Gorman for running this event and refereeing the final. Highest break of the day went to Paudie Kelly with a 57 break.
