Benny O Brien from the Kilkenny Shed won the 2017 Peter McNally Memorial Snooker Invitation event in Edenderry Snooker Club last weekend. Benny went on a potting rampage in Edenderry over the weekend, losing only 5 frames in the entire competition on his way to collect the “Peter McNally” cup.
A field of 38 players lined up for this prestigious event, now in its 28th year, and play started on Friday evening. Keith Sheldreck set the standard with the help of a 105 break as he beat Richie Toal 3-0. Newbridge provided 3 of the quarter-finalists. Former winner Adam Nolan and Charlie Sweeney had a great match that could have gone either way, but it was Adam who won 3-2 Benny O’Brien beat Paddy English 3-0. Joe Corrigan beat Phili McGrath also 3-0 and Andrew Doherty overcame the strong challenge of Paul Kelly 3-2
The first semi-final between Adam Nolan and Benny O’Brien was a sight to behold as neither player knew the meaning of the word “safety” and thet both went for everything. Benny came out on top 3-2 in just under an hour. Andrew Doherty just could not get into his stride against Joe Corrigan and Joe ran out a 3-0 winner.
The final started with Benny getting in first with a 45, which he followed with a 63 to take frame 1. Joe replied with a fine break of 83 to level proceedings. From here on Benny was in charge as he rattled off 3 frames to win 4-1. The high break prize went to Keith Sheldrecks 105.
