Murray wins Billiards Event 1

The first Billiards Ranking Event of the season took place at Newbridge Cyms on Sunday 8th October, 13 players took part and at the end of day’s play Aidan Murray got some measure of revenge when he defeated recently crowned Double National Billiards Champion Wayne Doyle.

There were pre quarter wins for Larry Drennan, Eugene Hughes, Anthony O’ Flaherty over billiards debutant Dylan Rees as well as Ross Doyle and of course his brother Wayne. In the quarter finals Aidan Murray won a hard fought match against Rathkeale clubman Jason Dowling by 2 games to 1 before getting the better of Larry Drennan in the semi final stage to eventually meet Wayne Doyle.

Wayne had solid wins over Aonghus McAnally, Anthony O’ Flaherty with the highest break of the day of 71 in that match before getting the better of Joe Doheny in the other semi final to set up another final showdown with Aidan.

The final turned out to be a one sided affair with Aidan showing huge signs of improvement from his two recent national final losses to Wayne by scoring well enough early on to take a solid lead for which Wayne struggled to get to grips with the table conditions and find any form and Aidan capitalised on this to win the first game 100-64.

Aidan was getting the rub of the green and Wayne couldn’t get a any sizeable breaks going as he desperately tried to keep close to Aidan on the scoreboard but Aidan finished the way he started when wrapped up the match with an impressive unfinished break of 45 with a tough in-off the red into the centre pocket to take the first event of the 2023-2024 season and top the billiards rankings going into the second billiards ranking event that will take place at the Snooker and Billiards Ireland Academy of Excellence in Carlow on Sunday 22nd October which is the Victor O’ Gorman Classic.

Also after losing in the first round John Kehoe won the plate competition 2-1 against Jason Dowling.

Thanks to Jim Carrick and Newbridge Cyms for hosting the event and John Kehoe as tournament director in what was a great day’s event.
