Patsy Farrell won the SBI Super Seniors (Over 55’s) National Championships in the SBI HQ Carlow on the 4th of June. In the final Patsy beat the defending Champion Stephen Merrigan in a great final.
New Institute Snooker Clubs Patsy Farrell claimed the Irish Super-Seniors Snooker National Championship title in the Snooker & Billiards Ireland Headquarters in Carlow on Sunday.
This was the final event of the season for the tour, confined to those over the age of 55.
Patsy went into the event, ranked the number one player, having won the opening event of the season, and having reached the final and semi-final in two of the other three tournaments.
Sixteen players entered the National Championship, with Patsy playing Eugene Hughes from Newbridge Snooker Club in the opening round. In a tight encounter, Patsy went on to win 3-1. This was followed soon after by a 3-0 over Oliver Martyn in the quarter-final.
A tough semi-final encounter followed against Waterford’s Nicholas Ryan, with Patsy appearing to be in danger of being beaten, before pulling the game back to win 3-2. This set up a final against the defending National champion, Stephen Merrigan from the Roadstone club in Dublin.
The final would prove to be a long and tactical affair, with the players sharing the spoils in the opening four frames, forcing the match into a final frame decider. In the end, victory went Patsy’s way on a 3-2 scoreline, winning him the National Championship and also sealing his place at the top of the national rankings for 2022-23.
