A field of 19 players took to the green baize in the Eglinton Snooker Club in Galway city for the second of this year’s Connacht Close tournaments. The No1 ranked player after the first tournament was Christopher Gibbons from Letterkenny.
In the top half of the draw Christopher eased through his opponent, Joe Mc Entagart from Galway, 3-0. In the second round Gareth Kirwin also fell to No1 ranked player in a 3-1 win. In the semi final Christopher took on one of the tournament favourites, Cathal Gordan, but breezed through in a 3-0 victory, going into the final without dropping a frame.
In the bottom half of the draw, No2 seed Aidan Devenney also breezed through to the final without dropping a frame. Aidan met highly regarded opponents Phelim Mc Clafferty, Sean Devenney (Aidan’s son) and Donal Foran.
The line up for the final was then a repeat of the first tournament; Aidan Devenney vs. Christopher Gibbons. Despite a strong challenge from Christopher the match went to Aidan who fought all the way to the end to win 3/2. It proved to be a great match with 5 breaks in the 40’s.
Well done to Aidan who shares the top spot on the rankings with Christopher going into the next tournament which will take place in the North West Snooker Club in Letterkenny on January 4th. Many thanks to the Eglinton Snooker Club in Galway for the use of their facilities on the day.
