Aaron v Dermot in 16’s National Final

Snooker & Billiards Ireland (SBI) held their SBI 16’s Snooker National Snooker Championships on Saturday the 3rd of May in the SBI HQ in Carlow. PJ Nolan’s 147academy is the title sponsor for all the Junior Tours this season.

The final will feature No.1 seed Aaron Donnelly from Newbridge CYMS against No.3 seed Dermot Kelly from Mayo after both players were in top class form. Both Semi Finals were also excellent when Aaron beat Adam Wynne and Dermot beat Liam Dunne.

Action started at 10am with all 19 of leading players from all across Ireland looking for a place in the 2025 final which will be played during finals weekend on the 17th – 18th of May in the SBI Academy of Excellence in Carlow. The TD was our National Coach PJ Nolan and the Referee was Conor Doyle.

This was the final ranking event to qualify our players for the Celtic Challenge and Home International Teams. It ended up a great day for James Stewart O Reily who beat No.3 seed Max Kennedy to qualify for Leeds for the first time along with Liam Dunne, Oscar Ellision Gibbons, Scott Cooke and William Shannon for the trip to Leeds.

Star of the Day

Star of the day went to Adam Wynne who is a leading junior pool player with many titles to his name from Tullamore who reached the semi final today in his first National U16 with outstanding victories on the day over Paddy King and James Stewart O Reilly. The current high break stands at 43 by Joe Shannon.

SBI 16 Ranking Event Dates & Venues

  • Event 1: 16’s TOUR 1 – The Ken Doherty Cup – 19th October – SBI HQ Carlow – WINNER DERMOT KELLY
  • Event 2: 16’s TOUR 2 – The Brendan O Donoghue Cup – 17th November – Hotshots SC Galway – WINNER LIAM DUNNE
  • Event 3: 16’s TOUR 3 – The Fergal O Brien Cup – 8th February – SBI HQ Carlow – WINNER – WINNER AARON DONNELLY
  • Event 4: 16’s TOUR 4 – The Rodney Goggins Cup – 23rd March – SBI HQ Carlow – WINNER – WINNER AARON DONNELLY
  • Event 5: 16’s NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – 3rd May – SBI HQ Carlow

This season will be holding four ranking events in 16’s and a National 16’s Championships. Start time for all matches in the 14’s will 10.00am. The Entry Fees for all Junior events is set at €10.00 each.

Dress Code – National Championships

Failure to meet with the Dress Code Guidelines will result in being removed from the event.

  • In the National Championships, one coloured shirt buttoned at the wrist and Waistcoats can only be worn
  • Bowties are also required for all matches during Championship finals weekend.
  • National Waistcoats are not permissible at any SBI National event.

It promises to be another exciting year of junior snooker with so many young talented Junior players looking to qualify for the Celtic Challenge, Home Internationals, World and European Snooker Championships in 2025. Joe Shannon won the National U-16 in 2024.

Age Limit

The SBI Age limit will be the 31st December 2024 for all SBI junior events. All member must remember International criteria may vary for events. SBI will go down rankings to qualify players who meet that particular age deadline.

Example:

      • 16’s: a player who’s 16th birthday is on or before 31st December 2024 will not be able to enter the SBI 16’s events in the 2024 /25 season

Draws & Match Times

Following the closing date all draws will be displayed on the web site – CLICK HERE

Players should be aware that all entries are through the on line system and you have to enter before the closing date of Thursday at 1pm prior to each event.

How to Enter

All players will need to register for the new season by paying their SBI registration / membership or Renew their membership for the 2024-2025 season.

  • Junior Membership is for all Under 21’s – €20.00

How to Register

If you were a member in the last three years you simply press the renewal button – CLICK HERE and use the same email and password you created when signing up to the system. You simply choose your type of membership and click and pay.

Junior Development

€1 entry fee will be offered to any Under 21 Junior player to compete in any of the three Adult open tours for the coming season. This is to encourage more juniors to attend adult events, gain experience, watch and play our leading players and be hopefully be motivated to improve more.

Format

Matches are played in a the best of 5 frames knock out format in roll on and off basis in the venue. The Q-Final, Semi Final and Final are the best of 5 frames
