Last Saturday the 4th Intermediate event was held in the Crucible club in Cork on the 9th of March. There was a disappointing entry of 15. However, what was lacking in quantity was made up by quality with some really exiting matches. Some notable first round matches included a battle between 2 of our more senior players, Tommy O Donoghue and Con Walsh.
A very tight match went the way of Tommy by 3 frames to one. Our chairman Jay Chopra took on local lad Jamie O Connor and while Jay eventually won 3-1 he was very impressed by young Jamies performance.
The quarter finals saw Mark Gleeson be a 3-1 winner over Jamie O Connor,a very tight match saw Llyod Myers prevail over Shane bates by 3 frames to 2. Jay Chopra had a 3 nil win over Charlie Cronin and Tommy overcame up and coming player Josh O Connor by 3 -1.laye
Semi finals,Mark Gleeson 3- 1 Llyod Myers, Tommy O Donoghue 3-2 Jay Chopra.
Mark was in fine form in beating Llyod 3-1 but few of us were expecting the drama in the second semi.
Jay was leading by 2 frames to nil and 35 ahead . The match looked over but Tommy had other ideas. Tommy laid a snooker and when it took jay a few tries to get out of it, Tommy cleared up to extend the match. Tommy then stepped up a gear to take the next 2 frames and the match.
If we thought the drama was going to end there we were wrong. The final saw Tommy race into a 2nil lead including a Fabulous 78 break in the second frame. Tommy had the chance to clinch the match with only 4 colours left in the third frame but somehow it looked the brown was in the pocket but somehow it didn’t drop. Mark took the frame and took the next 2 to win the tournament.
Our thanks to the Crucible club for hosting the event and to Maurice Walsh for his assistance for the day.
