Evans wins Cork Close ‘B’ Individual

Eddie Evans from the AOH Club is the 2015 ‘Cork Billiards and Snooker Association’ (CBSA) ‘Cork Close B’ snooker champion following a great tournamentToday Sunday the 8th of November at the Crucible snooker club.

After a terrific turn out at the ‘North Side’ venue the matches came quick and fast with a very good standard throughout the day. The man mainly responsible for the running of the event and the high entry was the hard working Brian Quilligan who is the current administrator of Cork snooker told Rebel Snooker “The clubs have responded well and we had a very good entry to the ‘Cork Close B championships’ and this is always a great event, because the players are so closely matched, but there can only be one winner and today that was Eddie Evans from the AOH Club and many congratulations to him.

Evan who trailed Karl Busteed from Douglas snooker club by a frame, showed quality and won the next three frames in a row to seal the deal.

A great win for the AOH man, but spare a thought for 11 year old Sean Walsh from the Crucible snooker club who won four rounds to lose out narrowly in the semi-final to Karl Busteed. At eleven years of age he is a remarkable prospect and a healthy sign that Cork snooker is in good hands for the future.

CBSA Cork Close ‘B’ results

Last 8: (Best of Three frames)

Sean Walsh (Crucible) bt Sean Burns (Crucible)

Karl Busteed (Douglas) bt Ger Quilligan (Douglas)

Dylan O’Shaughnessy (Crucible) bt Ivan Glavin (Douglas)

Eddie Evans (AOH) bt Stephen Walsh (Crucible)

Semi-Finals: (Best of Five frames)

Karl Busteed 3 – 2 Sean Walsh

Eddie Evans 3 – 0 Dylan O’Shaughnessy

Final: (Best of Five frames)

Eddie Evans 3 – 1 Karl Busteed

High Break prize went to Karl Busteed.

Domestically The Crucible ‘A’ and Youghal CYMS ‘A’ provided their usual top class tense snooker in Division one of the CBSA Cork snooker league last week with the teams tied at two matches each and the last match between the Crucibles David Cassidy and Youghal’s Aaron Tobin tied at a frame each and Tobin ahead by 25 points with one red left on the table saw Egypt bound Cassidy make one of the finest 34 clearances under all sorts of pressure, sinking the red and the pink and all the colours to win the match for the Crucible, I am looking forward to the league semi-final’s already!

Just a quick reminder that the Timmy Murphy ‘Memorial Billiards Tournament’ will be held in the Ivy Rooms in Carlow on the 29th of November, there will be details on the RIBSA website www.ribsa.ie and for any further information, contact anyone at the AOH Club. This is a very important day for Cork cue-men to remember and respect the late but great Timmy by entering this event.

Meanwhile the ‘2016 Munster Snooker Club Championship’ draw will take place on Monday the 23rd of November at the Silver Springs hotel in Cork at 7pm.

There will be a meeting of representative delegates from the clubs first to discuss issues in relation to the championships and the draw will follow directly afterwards.

Tournament Director Connie O’Sullivan said “It’s that time of year again as we look forward to the trip to Killarney for the Munster snooker championships and I would like it if each club competing has a representative at the pre-draw meeting. Last year we had 35 teams in the event and I am expecting the same number for January. The championships are a little earlier this year and that and many other items of interest can be discussed at the meeting prior to the draw. I am looking forward to it again this year and I know that is a great social occasion as well as a top class snooker event and it will be great to catch up with the Munster snooker players, their friends and family once more at the Gleneagle Hotel”.

The Munster snooker club championships start at 10am on Friday the 15th of January and conclude on Sunday evening the 17th of January. The All Ireland snooker club championships start at 10am on Thursday the 21st of January and conclude on Sunday evening the 24th of January.

CONGRATULATIONS to Youghal’s Ross Bulman who recently won the ‘Cork Billiards and Snooker Association’ (CBSA) Cork County U16 snooker championship in Youghal CYMS.

Bulman defeated another up and coming young player Aaron Hill from the Crucible snooker club by two frames to one frame in the final. Bulman had to come from a frame down to win and he now adds the Cork U16 title to his many successes on the green baize including three national titles as well as Munster team wins and the Cork County U14 title.

Ross amazingly now has qualified to represent the RIBSA Republic of Ireland U18 team too.

Ross and a six of his Youghal CYMS team mates were at the Ivy Rooms in Carlow last weekend at the home of the ‘Republic of Ireland Billiards and Snooker Association’ (RIBSA) headquarters at the ‘National Academy’ where the qualification rounds were played for qualification at U18 level for the forthcoming European U18 championshipswhich will be held in Poland in February 2016 and Ross is now in the team, so a double congratulation.

The first event was held last Sunday on the 7th November in the Ivy Rooms and the second event will be held on the 21st of November in the Northwest snooker club in Letterkenny with both finalists from the two events qualifying for the European Championships. John Doherty will be Tournament Director for the 2nd event.

Meanwhile domestically the AOH ‘A’ side travelled to the Crucible last week and came away with all three points as the multi-winning Crucible side lost at home in a rare defeat.

Shane O’Mahony, David Forde and Sonny Stack were the men from Morrison’s Island who did the damage and it sends out a signal that the AOH could be a team to reckon with.

I have always felt that if the AOH could click, they are capable of beating any side, so the league which has been dominated by the Crucible over recent years could have some surprises this season, with Youghal CYMS ‘A’ and Youghal CYMS ‘B’ the Crucible ‘A’ and the AOH ‘A’ contending the semi-finals it will be interesting to see who will be the 2015/16 CBSA Cork snooker league division one champions come the end of February.
