Jason Devaney from Crosmolina Snooker Club in County Mayo created Irish snooker history this weekend when he won the Republic Of Ireland Senior National Championship. In the final Jason beat Irish Number 1 player David Hogan from Nenagh 8 frames to 6 in a superb quality final in the Ivy Rooms Snooker Club in Carlow. The win ends a fantastic season for the 18 year old Ballina man who also won the Under 19 National Championship and the Under 21 National Championship in 2011.
He is believed to be the first player to win all three national championships and finished number 1 in both junior rankings in the same season. He is now ranked in the top 7 of the senior rankings and qualifies for the first time to play in the Senior Home Internationals to become one of the youngest players ever to compete for Ireland. Jason will now receive a paid trip to compete in the World Amateur men’s championship in China in November where he will come up against the best players from all around the world.
Jason thanked his parents and his Club Crosmolina for all their help support and to his coach PJ Nolan who has giving him the belief and guidance over the past 5 years to help him with the titles. Jason focus will now turn to the world under 21 Championships in Canada in July. David Hogan was beaten in the final but his season also ends on a high by finishing number 1 on the rankings and this will earn him a place on the professional tour next season against players such as John Higgins, Ronnie O Sullivan, Ken Doherty and others.
