The final day of snooker action in the group stages was held today in the world under 21 championships here in Montreal Canada.
Twenty one year old Cork man Greg Casey won again today beating Pierre Yves Laine from France 4 frames 1 to win 6 out of 7 matches to finish second in the group.
Greg has shown this week that he can beat anyone on his day and he is determinate to make his last world under 21’s his best ever championship.
Vincent Muldoon was again in sparking form in beating Rhys Clark from Scotland 4 frames to 1 knocking in another high break in the event with a 122 which could and should have been 140 as he missed the blue on the clearance. The Galway man now finishes first in his group with 7 wins from 7 matches and he will be among the top seeds for tonight’s knock out draw. David Cassidy is another player having a great event when the cork man won again today in beating Sam Bond from New Zealand 4 frames to 0.
This earns David second place in his group with 6 wins from 8 matches and he can not wait to play in the knock out rounds tomorrow. Jason Devaney lost his final match today in the groups when he was beating by Thailand player Akani Songsermsawad.
Devaney won the opening frame with a 82 break but fell 1-3 down before fighting back to level at 3-3. The match was then pulled of due to the start of the next session and after the match restarted the Thai player won the deciding frame to win the match 3-4 to leave the Ballina man with 4 wins from 7 matches in the Groups.
Jason now finishes fourth in the group after a mix bag of performances but the Mayo man has proved over the years that he loves the big knock out rounds.
The draw features David Cassidy playing UAE player Khalid Al Kamali who beat Devaney in his group.
Greg will play Austria Under 21 champion Andreas Ploner who was beaten by David Cassidy in his group match .
Vincent Muldoon faces Julian Heusdens from Belgium who was beaten by Devaney in his group.
Finally it will be a battle between two PJ Nolan Academy members when Jason Devaney who will play Shachar Ruberg from Israel in what promises to be a great match.
As the national coach I am very pleased with the Irish boys performances in the group stages and I hope the best is yet to come in the knock outs but the standard is getting higher and higher each year.
