242 cueists for IBSF World Championships

242 cueists from 51 countries must all be making last minute preparations as the 2013 IBSF World Snooker Championship gets closer and closer. The mega event is to begin November 27th at the awesome Daugavpils Olympic Sports Center in the picturesque city of Daugavpils, Latvia and will finish on December 8th.

Of the 242 players who shall participate in this massive event, 126 will fight it out for the Men’s trophy. The Masters and Women events will see 74 and 42 contestants respectively. Their battleground, that 6’x12’ area with the green baize, is to be provided by ‘Shender’ the official table provider to IBSF, Snooker Balls from ‘Aramith’ and the table cloth by ‘Strachan’.

ABOUT DAUGAVPILS

Daugavpils is Latvia’s second largest city (116 000 inhabitants), and is situated about 230 km south-east of Riga, along the Lithuanian and Belarusian borders.

The city was established around the Dinaburg Fortress, built by the Livonian Order of German Knights in 1275. Daugavpils developed on the crossroads of various cultures and religions. For centuries, it was ruled by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and later the Russian Empire took control.

Over the centuries, city development was strongly influenced by large Russian Old Believer and Jewish populations. During the 18-19th centuries many Jewish people were deported to the Russian Empire borders. Now, Daugavpils is primarily a Russian city as the remaining old Jewish families were killed during Word War II.

Daugavpils is a spacious, green city with a delightfully provincial charm. Despite its quaint atmosphere and low prices, the city possesses fully modern services. Over the last decade an ice-hall, bowling centre, diverse entertainment centres and up-to-date hotels have been built.
