The sixth RIBSA billiards ranking event of the season took place on Sunday 3rd March in Celbridge snooker club in Co.Kildare with national long-up champion Wayne Doyle winning 4 of the 6 ranking events this season and firmly establish top spot in this season’s rankings going into the national championships towards the business end of the season.
This was a 90 minute format and seeded with 14 players entering. Wayne duly booked his place in the with wins over Phil Martin, Brendan Devlin where he compiled 5 plus 50 breaks before defeating Lloyd Myers who overcame Tommy Murphy and Larry Drennan in close battles.
It came as no surprise that Wayne’s opponent in the final would be the man from Hollywood in Wicklow as Aidan Murray had comfortable wins against John Kehoe, Eugene Hughes who overcame Aonghus McAnally and Joe Doheny who pipped No.3 seed Ross Doyle in the quater final.
Wayne won the final decider with panache as he scored well early on to give himself a cushion that Aidan couldn’t recover from even though he had the consolation of scoring the highest break of the day with 184. With the championships looming large nobody will be ruling out these two men meeting in one or both formats of the senior billiards championship finals at finals weekend in May.
Thanks to Tournament Director Brendan Devlin and Phil Martin and Celbridge snooker club on their hard work on the day. The national 150up championship will take place in the Ivy Rooms Snooker Club in Carlow on Sunday 31st March. To enter text or call Brendan Devlin on 086-6062420.
