This year’s Final was contested by Keith Sheldreck from Q Club and Dan Dempsey from Newbridge. As usual a large crowd were present to witness the match.
In the semi-finals Dan Dempsey beat Brendan Thomas from the Roadstone Club and Keith Sheldreck had a 3 – 0 win over James Bateman from the Kilkenny Shed.
The final turned out to be a nervous tense affair with both players below par sharing the first 4 frames. However, after the break Dan got inspiration from somewhere and won the title with an opportune 48 break in the final frame.
In his speech, Dan thanked TD Jim Carrick and his team for all the work over the last few weeks organising the event. He also thanked the Quinn family for their continued support and looked forward to playing in many more Anthony Quinn tournaments.
St Conleth’s CY also expressed again their gratitude to Tony and Mena and all the Quinn family for their help and support in staging the tournament. 64 players went to post Friday night and play continued all day Saturday with the Q-finals, Semi’s and final played today Sunday. Thanks to Tony Thorpe, Leo Kennedy and Tom Cronley for keeping us all informed on facebook.
In his closing speech TD Jim Carrick thanked all the players for their continued support of this very special event in the life of St. Conleth’s. He paid tribute to Richie and Alan for having everything in place over the weekend and to all who helped make the tournament the success it was. He congratulated referee’s Tony Thorpe, John and Michelle O’Boyle for officiating on Sunday.
Tony and Mena Quinn selected young Gavin O’Donnell as the recipient of the player of the tournament, a decision well received by all the attendance.
Everyone is looking forward already to next years’ event.
