The 3rd of this year’s National Intermediate tournaments was held at the North West Snooker club in Letterkenny on Sun. 22nd of November. There were 21 entries on the day with over ½ the entries by local players.
The first match up was between Fergal Quinn (St Michael’s) and Gareth Kirwin (CYMS Letterkenny) and despite getting a 75 and 53 breaks Gareth lost out 3/1 in the match. This break of 75 was to be the best of the day.
When we reached the quarter finals 7 of the 8 players were from Letterkenny, in the top half Richie Toal from Mullingar defeated Eamon Harkin (North West) 3/0 and Sean Devenney (North West) overcame Aman Goel (North West) in a very tight match 3/2. In the bottom half of the draw Sean McVeigh (North West) fell to Adrian Mc Fadden (CYMS Letterkenny) by 3 frames to 2. The last match saw Aidan Devenney (North West) have a comprehensive victory over Bernard Mc Guinness (North West) 3 frames to nil.
At this point it was thought it may be a Devenney father and son final, but it was not to be with both father and son losing out. Sean lost out to Richie Toal 3/0 and Aidan lost to Adrian McFadden 3/0.
The final started at 6.30 with both players playing it cautious at the start, but Adrian eventually got his nose in front to win in a Black ball game. Adrian took the second comfortably to stretch his lead. Richie played well in the third and brought it back to 2/1. In the fourth Richie went ahead by 25 points but Adrian fought back to clinch the frame and match 3/1.
RIBSA would like to thank the North West Snooker Club for the use of the club and John Doherty as tournament director.
