There were 44 entries to the seventh point’s tournament of the 2014/15 season. All of the seeds moved into the Last 16 with the exception of Mark Owens who lost out to Douglas Hogan. This was Douglas’s first tournament this year and he lost out by a single frame in the next round to John Sutton. The only other seed not to reach the last sixteen was Philip Brown who lost out in a tense black ball fifth frame to Cathal Gordan from Galway.
In the last sixteen one of the main shocks was the defeat of No3 seed Michael Judge at the hands of Peter Donegan. At the top of the draw Rodney Goggins moved on to the semi finals at the cost of John Sutton 3/0 and No4 seed Robert Murphy moved past Anthony Bonnar 3/1. In the bottom half Greg Casey defeated Peter Donegan 3/1 and No 2 seed Brendan O Donoghue defeated David Cassidy 3/0
Rodney Goggins moved on to his 6th final this season over Robert Murphy with the help of a couple of flukes. No 2 seed also reached the final over Greg Casey on a 3/1 score line. This was Brendan’s fourth final this season.
The two in form players of this season proved their ranking positions with a sensational display of snooker and again a very tight encounter with Brendan scraping the final frame to win the tournament. This was Brendan’s second Ranking Points Tournament win this year. Congratulations to Brendan who also had the high break of the tournament which he got in his first match of the day, an excellent 120 break. Rodney remains in No1 position on the rankings with a cushion of 130 points going in to the Championship which starts on the 2nd of May.
Many thanks to the referee’s on the day and to the Ivy Rooms for the use of this excellent facility.
