The first of this year’s Masters Snooker tournament’s took place this weekend in Letterkenny. There were 14 competitors on the day and the wild card danger man in the first round was the un-seeded Colm Gilcreest who defeated Shane Gorman to continue to the Quarter finals. All the other seeds were successful in their first matches. The first Quarter final match saw Colm Gilcreest again proceed by toppling the number one seed Tom O Driscoll 3/0. Keith Sheldrick from Dublin was successful over Alan Matic from Celbridge in a 3/1 match.
In the bottom half of the draw Anthony Bonnar from Letterkenny overcame Carrig man Stephen Walsh 3/1. In the last of the quarter finals Dessie Sheehan from Celbridge was successful over Tony Seymour from New Institute in Nenagh 3/1.
In a very tight semi final match Keith Sheldrick lost out, despite having an 80 break, to the in from and now favourite Colm Gilcreest. The other match saw Anthony Bonnar and Dessie Sheehan slog it out in a titanic battle where Bonnar eventually got the upper hand.
In the final Gilcreest took the first frame but Bonnar came back in the next with a 72 break. The third frame saw Gilcreest take the frame with a 109 break, which was not to be beaten in the tournament. Gilcreest went on to take the next frame and the tournament with two 30 plus breaks.
Congratulations to Colm who continues his success from the National Championship’s and now takes the first tournament of the new season, he is going to be the man to watch this year in the Masters series.
Many thanks again to the North West Snooker Club for their hospitality and fabulous tables for the tournament.
