February 17th, 18th and 19th.
At the weekend the 11th running of the Anthony Quinn Memorial Tournament was won in exciting fashion by Josh Boileau from the host club. In his semi-final Josh accounted for Tony Thorpe by a convincing 3 frames to nil. In the second semi-final Ernie McMullen recorded a 3 – 1 win over club mate Joe Corrigan. The final however was a much tighter affair with Ernie opening up a 3-1 lead only for Josh to level at 3-3. The last frame was very tense with both players missing when among the balls and the outcome was in doubt right up to the end when Ernie jawed the final black, leaving it hanging over the pocket for Josh to pot.
The Anthony Quinn Cup, trophies and cash prizes were presented by Anthony’s parents, Tony and Mena who offered their thanks to the players and club for their participation and organisation of the tournament. Tony noted that every year it goes from strength to strength with a very satisfying 65 players taking part this year. Club Chairman Ronnie Masterson commented in his speech that it was gratifying to see four club members contest the semi-finals for the first time.
Club secretary Tony Thorpe thanked all who contributed to the success of the tournament and said it was no coincidence that both finalists would be representing Ireland at the upcoming European Team and under 21 Championships in Bulgaria.
