Congratulations to Celbridge player Phil Arnold who won the Amateur Cup in Killarney today beating Benny O’Brien 3-1 in the final. Phil will now play in the televised stages at the German Masters in Berlin next February as his reward for winning the Amateur Cup.
The event was restricted to all Irish and Continental European players and was a great event for all the Irish lads to take part in alongside the main event. The matches started at around 8pm every night and Phil was a well deserved winner of the event after coming through a very tough draw from the start of the event.
Phil beat Northern Ireland’s Alastair Wilson 3-1 in the first round and then followed that up with a great 3-2 win over on form Josh Boileau in the next round. A 3-0 win over Ray Power was then good enough to send Phil into the final days play on the Sunday.
Sunday morning saw Phil record a 3-2 win over John Torpey and then a superb 3-1 victory over ex-pro Jordan Brown from the North to send him into the final against Benny O’Brien. The final saw Phil run out a 3-1 winner on the night just in time to collect the trophy before the PTC final itself gets underway with Judd Trump facing off against Neil Robertson.
