The ladies 6-Red national championships was held in Celbridge on 14th August. There were 5 players present. The players played each other 3 frames each in a round-robin format. 1 point was awarded per frame and the top 2 players on points at the end of the round robin competed in the final.
Michelle Sherwin was the 1st to secure her place in the final with a finishing score of 9 frames out of 12. 2nd place was fought for right to the last match. Sandra Bryan from Gorey was sitting in 2nd place with 8 frames won from 12. Catherine Fitzsimons played Cathy Dunne in the last round robin match.
Cathy needed to win 3-0 to also finish on 8 and force a playoff frame with Sandra. It was not to be however, as Catherine took the 2nd frame. Allthough Cathy went on to win 2-1 it still left her in 3rd on 7 frames won.
Reigning Champion Michelle Sherwin played Sandra Bryan from Gorey in the Final. The 1st frame was nip and tuck, and in the end sandra virtually handed the frame to Michelle when she went for a tight cut on the pink into the centre sack and narrowly missed the pink alltogether, leaving Michelle just needing to pot the pink after the foul which she did. Michelle started the 2nd frame with a break of 31 which won her this frame easily.
Michelle won the 3rd frame quite well also, but the 4th frame could have gone either way with bith players missing chances to put the frame away. Michelle prevailed in the end and won the frame on the pink to take the frame, the match 4-0 and the title.
Congratulations to Michelle on regaining her title. We also wish the ladies team, along with all of the others teams competing for Ireland, the very best of luck in this years Home Internationals in wales in September.
As a closing to the season, we would very much like to thank Mr. Phil Martin for all of his continued support of the Ladies Association, and all of the staff at both Celbridge and Breakers Gorey for looking after the Ladies so well this past year.
