It may be a familiar sight in Hurling however this time round it was on the green baize and in the final of the Carrick On Suir Team Cup. The Carrick On Suir club in Co.Tipperary ran a team snooker event over the last few months with 17 teams taking part in all and after a lot of group games the final was played last Saturday night.
It was Kilkenny’s James Bateman, Benny O’Brien and John O’Sullivan who took on the Waterford “B” team of Robbie Walker, Nicky Ryan and Richie Flynn in the final and it was Kilkenny who started strong winning the first three frames of the night. The format of each player playing each of the opposing players 1 frame each meant that the first to five frame won so it was imperative that Waterford won the next frame with Richie Flynn winning the fourth frame against John O’Sullivan.
Kilkenny won the next frame and James Bateman then closed out the match 5-1 when he beat Richie Flynn although Waterford looked like taking the next frame on Table 2. Kilkenny were presented with a cash prize along with a fine piece of Tipperary Crystal , the same piece that was recently presented to the likes of Rafa Nadal during a US Open Series win, with Tipperary Crystal the trophy sponsors for those major events. This piece was generously sponsored by Sure Heating and Plumbing by owner Sean O’Donnell who’s a member of the Carrick Club.
The night continued on till the small hours with one or two beverages partaken of in the Carrick Club who put on a great night for all that went up. The club hopes to make this an annual event and would like to thank all the clubs who took part in the event including Waterford, Kilkenny, Cappoquinn, Thurles and Clonmel along with their own six teams.
